Have you been considering the mere thought that is to quit teaching? As a teacher, I will not deny that this thought is in my mind every time I do random teacher duties like exam checking, meetings and even during lectures. But again, it has been years and I'm still attached to this profession.
Many teachers have noted and even stressed how small the salary of a teacher is - even if you have your masters degree or even doctorate degree. Compared to those who work in Corporate America, your salary as a teacher really is very low. But guess what? In spite of this, there are some things you will really love about teaching that you just can't find anywhere else. Allow me to stress some reasons why not to quit teaching.
Reason # 1: New people. Students always enter and exit our classrooms. Each year, each semester, new students and new faces come and go. This is a regular cycle and a never ending one for teachers. Thus we get to meet new faces, discovering new personalities, and new found friends. Since our environment is so diverse and constantly evolving, we can not deny that teachers have the highest circle of fans and acquaintances. Imagine having 40 new members in your class every year or every semester. In a few years time, you can surely accumulate over a hundred. Moreover, some of these students will never cease to forget you and continuously regarded you as one of their educators.
Reason # 2: Unique profession. It has been said in history that teaching is the noblest profession of all. This is undoubtedly true. Teachers are given a task to mold children into what they want and what they can do. Students are allowing their mentors to change them into someone suitable for the society. Teachers are responsible for other professions such as doctors, engineers, scientists and more. Without them, other professions would just die. Great men and women in history are well known teachers. A few instances are our great philosophers and even icons in religion. They impart knowledge to others. And that has created wise and intelligent people on earth for countless generations.
Reason #3: Dynamic environment. Even when teaching the same subject, educators always find themselves imparting new lessons and topics to their students. There is a constant challenge to improve and learn more. Our job is not stationary, for we need to change our ways of teaching to suit the new generation of learners. Therefore, we are always digesting information and more knowledge to improve the profession. This makes it very challenging. Additionally, our job is not routine and boring like other work. We have seminars every now and then, new book editions to read, new lectures to deliver, and new students to talk to.
These are just some ideas that make teaching so nice and challenging, and all the more reason to stick despite the pay and compensation. In the twilight of our lives, we will not count how much we had invested financially, but rather how many lives we touched and changed. Knowing this, will you still quit teaching?
